Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Ashley Schoen and I will be your teacher.
I am very excited to work with you throughout the year. Hopefully you and your student are ready to leap into learning. One really exciting thing about the school year and next, is I get to be their teacher again when they are in 4th grade! At Benjamin E. Mays, we will be implementing the "looping" style. Research shows that classrooms can build a wonderful community, establish stronger routines, and of course have positive academic growth!
In this note you will find out a little bit about whom I am.
This year is my 9th year working at Benjamin E. Mays. The first position I had here back in 2008 was a 2nd grade teacher. Then I was a teaching assistant in the Autism program for two years. Then I taught 4th grade for 5 years and now I am teaching my first year of 3rd grade.
I went to high school in N. St. Paul, graduating in 2000. Following high school I journeyed up to Duluth, MN, knowing I wanted to be a teacher. I attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth for 4 years majoring in Elementary Education and a minor in Teaching Mathematics. After the 4 years in Duluth, I came back to the Twin Cities to do my student teaching in St. Paul, at Como Park Elementary; in December of 2004 I graduated. Immediately after graduating I stayed in the cities and did 2 ½ years of substitute teaching in both Stillwater and St. Paul schools. After having the opportunity to work in many schools, I took a full time job at Como Park Elementary as a teaching assistant. I worked at Como Park for 3 years before coming to Benjamin E. Mays.
Outside of school, I live in Maplewood with my husband, Derek, our son Austin who is 6 years old, as a BIG 1st grader now!! Then there is our daughter Alexandra who is only 28 months old. Also at home we have a 8-year-old chocolate lab, Hank. When the workday is done I enjoy many things. Most importantly is hanging out with my family and friends. We were a very busy family this summer between going to the cabin, Austin playing T-ball for the second year, and simply spending time with the kids outside!
A new and interesting fact for this year is Benjamin E. Mays is going to be a looping school. This means that I will be teaching 3rd grade this year, but then next year I will be “looping” with my same kiddos to 4th grade. Looping makes me really excited for the fact that I will get to know the group of kiddos even better and routines will be in place for our second year together!
In conclusion, I look forward to the year ahead and thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions throughout the year feel free to contact me through email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone at 651-325-2454.
